Year 1
BEGINNING YEAR ONE
Commencing school can be exciting but quite a challenging experience for some youngsters. Children develop at different rates, have different learning styles and arrive with varied degrees of readiness for formal schooling.
We encourage parents with children in the very early years at school to keep fairly close contact with the teacher, constantly discussing the child's development - social, academic and emotional. Teachers will of course contact parents if any difficulties arise regarding a child's progress.
YEAR 1 SCREENING
Prep children entering Year 1 are screened, at the end of the Prep year, in order to better cater for the individual student's needs. Early intervention in basic literacy skills is provided in Term 1 and 2 as a result of the information gained.
HOW CAN I HELP AT HOME?
A positive attitude and genuine interest in what your child brings from school is invaluable. Below are a few ideas for reinforcing the attitudes and work habits we try to foster in the classroom:
- Read to and listen attentively to the child's first attempts to read.
- Encourage correct posture and pencil hold when your child is writing.
- Have a positive attitude when your child first attempts to write.
- Don't over correct - this can spoil some of the enthusiasm the child has when showing off his work, or discussing it with you.
- Encourage the pointing out of words, signs, numbers etc. in the child's environment.
- Encourage the use of correct letter and number formation.
- Talk about your child's day with him/her and listen carefully to his/her responses.
We hope that you will find some of these suggestions helpful.
All parents are encouraged to become active members of our school community and your assistance is greatly valued. Some of the ways in which you can help include:
